freeing scientists to focus on science

BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND EXECUTIVE TEAM

Leonard A. Herzenberg, Ph.D., Director

ImageWidely known as one of the pioneers of modern biotechnology, Len headed the team that developed the Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter (FACS) at Stanford University. He helped found what is now Becton-Dickinson Biosciences, the leading manufacturer of FACS systems, and has recently agreed to head the Invitrogen Science Advisory Board for flow cytometry.

Len also pioneered the use of monoclonal antibodies as reagents for FACS and other medical technologies.

Emeritus Professor of Genetics at Stanford University Medical School , Len has contributed greatly to understanding the immune system and has trained many of the leading scientists in the field. The National Academy of Sciences elected him to membership in 1982 and several top scientific prizes have recognized his work. These include the Torino Medical Award (2007), Kyoto Prize (2006), Novartis Award in Immunology (2004), the Edwin D. Ullman Award in Clinical Chemistry (2002) and the  the Lifetime Service Award of the American Association of Immunologists (1998).

Leonore A. Herzenberg, Ph.D., Director

ImageAn internationally recognized geneticist and immunologist with a doctorate from the Sorbonne, Lee has devoted herself in recent years to the design of computer software to make more effective use of FACS and other new technologies. Software she pioneered is currently in use at leading bio-med laboratories around the world, and her vision led to the creation of ScienceXperts.

Professor of Genetics at Stanford University Medical School , she has greatly expanded our understanding of immunity, allergy, and HIV infection, as well as the basic science of mouse lymphocyte development. She has made major contributions to the creation of monoclonal antibody technology for both pre-clinical and clinical studies and to the development of advanced research instruments.  In recognition of her contributions, she shared with Len the 2007 Torino Medical Award.

Lee also worked with John Sall, Founder and Vice President of the SAS Institute and developer of the SAS JMP scientific software, a collaboration that brought the Herzenberg Laboratory the Computer World Smithsonian Award for Heroic Achievement in Information Technology (1996).

Mark A. Musen, MD, Ph.D., Advisor

ImageHead of Medical Informatics at Stanford , Mark is a world leader in bringing together top biomedical scientists and cutting-edge computer technology. He led the effort to create Protégé, Stanford's widely acclaimed open-source software, which uses the latest in knowledge-based design.

Mark has worked to make Protégé available to a wide range of users, from the warehousing industry to the National Institutes of Health and National Library of Medicine. He has helped integrate Protégé into the heart of ScienceXperts software, which puts a whole new world of application-specific knowledge at the user's fingertips.

Stephen Meehan, Director, Principal Engineer and Acting CEO

ImageWith over 20 years managing top software talent, Stephen served as a principal engineer/architect on Nortel's management systems for digital transmission networks and on the development of the Sunrise Clinical Manager product line, one of America's largest hospital data management systems. Stephen also served as a knowledge engineering consultant to the Stanford School of Medicine from October 2000 to March 2005.

Stephen's experience is wide-reaching. He has worked with Microsoft, Oracle, and Sun technologies, introduced innovative uses of Protégé, and collaborated on expert systems that automate and control the workflows of advanced scientific and medical reasoning.

Kenjiro Tominaga, Director

President and CEO of our principal investor Tomy Seiko Co., Ltd, of Tokyo, Ken heads one of the world's largest manufacturers of centrifuges and other precision biomedical instruments. He is also President and CEO of Tomy Digital Biology Co., Ltd., an innovative software and instrumentation company that will distribute ScienceXperts products in Japan and other Asia-Pacific markets.
